Abstract

1415493 Sewing machines NEWEY GOODMAN LTD 20 Nov 1972 [26 Nov 1971] 54928/71 Heading D1G A lockstitch sewing machine having first and second needles disposed side by side has first and second bobbin mountings and looper drives defining bobbin axes associated respectively with the first and second needles, the first and second axes being disposed respectively to the rear of the first needle and the front of the second needle, considered in the feeding direction of the machine, the bobbin mountings being movable away from the sewing station to facilitate bobbin replacement. The machine described sews eyelets (as shown) or hooks to a tape, the finished tape comprising (Figs. 14-16, not shown) a band (114) of non textile, fibrous stiffening, and three textile strips (115, 119 and 121), the anchor ends of the eves being inserted under the folded edges of the latter strips and secured by seams (151, 152) provided by the two needles. Looper construction and drive (Fig. 3) The loopers and bobbins are driven by tubular shafts extending below a frame 20 in which carriers 35 are secured, the right hand carrier being adjustably secured through slots 36. Toothed wheels on the shafts are connected by gear trains or, as shown, a toothed belt to a toothed wheel provided on a shaft 19 driven by bevels in gearbox 23 from a driven shaft 38. The gearbox 23 is secured to the frame which is pivoted by trunnions 21 to the machine bed, the trunnions 21 and shaft 38 being co-linear. Operation of a detent handle 33 allows the frame to swing downwardly without disconnecting the drive from shaft 38, allowing the return of the frame with bobbins replaced, without loss of timing. A thread replenishment warning is provided (Fig. 13, not shown). Moving needles laterally, feed by rollers. (Figs. 7, 12) The lower feed roller 68 is urged towards its driven roller 57 by spring 61 which may be overcome by operating handle 63 to cause rods 64 to depress roller 68. Roller 57 is operated intermittently and irreversibly by a shaft 51 driven by a ratchet mechanism 52-54 which may be rendered ineffective to stop feeding by mechanism 71, 72 actuated by cam links 81 on a pattern chain 79 disposed in length (Fig. 11, not shown) at the back of the machine when a zig zag stitch is required to secure part of an eye to the tape. Mechanism 72 is connected by members 87, 90 to an edge cam 91 operable to swing (Fig. 12, not shown) the gate (96) of the needle bar (98). Inserting eyes and hooks. Eyes are supplied (by means not shown) to circular ways 133 at either side of the sewing position and are moved onto the tape by arcuate slides (134, Fig. 17, not shown) actuated through arms 136 and linkage 143-150 from a face cam 113 also connected to mechanism 72, the device thus inserting eyes while the tape is at rest.
