Abstract

1415337 Mounting piezoelectric resonators BULOVA WATCH CO Inc 1 Dec 1972 [2 Dec 1971] 55732/72 Heading H1E A piezoelectric resonator 17 is supported by strain-free leads L which extend from nodal points on the resonator to plated areas 18, 19, 20 upon an insulating (e.g. aluminium oxide), planar member 16. The latter fits within the base 11 of a hermetic metal (e.g. aluminium) envelope, where it is held by terminal pins 12, 13 which extend through holes in the member 16 and are connected (e.g. soldered) to the plated areas 18, 19 respectively. The flanged cover of the envelope (not shown) is attached to the base 11 by cold welding. The pins are anchored to the base by glass seals 14, 15. The resonator 17 may be a quartz XY-cut flexural bar electroded on all four longitudinal surfaces the upper and lower electrodes being conductively connected by a strip (not shown) plated on one of the lateral surfaces. Lead L1 is connected between this strip and plating 19, whilst leads L3, L4 are connected between respective lateral electrodes and plating 18. Lead L2 is connected between one of the lateral electrodes and plating 20 which is insulated from both terminal pins. Driving potentials are applied though the pins to platings 18, 19. The leads are attached to the electrodes by thermo-compression and are soldered to the platings 18, 19, 20. Before soldering they are allowed to assume a strain-free configuration.
