1414924 Alpha methyl styrene block copolymerization VORONEZHSKY FILIAL VSESOJUZNOGO NAUCHNO-ISSLEDOVATELSKOGO INSTITUTA SINTETICHESKOGO KAUCHUKA IMENIAKADEMIKA 10 May 1973 22412/73 Heading C3P Thermostable block copolymers of the formula A, B, C, where A is a polyalphamethylstyrene block, B is a polyconjugated dione block and C is a polystyrene block, are obtained by a threestage sequential process effected in the presence of sec.-butyl lithium initiator, the initial polymerization of alphamethylstyrene being effected in the monomer itself or in a hydrocarbon solvent at 0‹ to 40‹ C., the subsequent stages forming the B and C blocks being effected in a hydrocarbon solvent at 40‹ to 80‹ C. The latter two stages may be carried out by sequential addition of the diene and later the styrene or by addition of a mixture of the monomers, with the diene being polymerized at 40‹ to 60‹ C. and the styrene subsequently at 60‹ to 80‹ C. The dienes are suitably butadiene or isoprene. The microstructure of the dione portions of the products is predominantly 1,4- with, in examples, about 8 to 12% 1,2-units and approximately equal amounts of cis- and trans-1,4-units. The monomers and solvents are desirably purified, e.g. by titration with the butyl lithium or with dilithiopolydienes.
