Abstract

1409956 Alphamethyl styrene block copolymerization VORONEZHSKY FILIAL VSESOJUZNOGO NAUCHNO ISSLEDOVATELSKOGO INSTITUTA SINTETICHESKOGO KAUCHUKA IMENI AKADEMIKA SV LEBEDEVA VORONEZH 10 May 1973 22411/73 Heading C3P Thermostable block copolymers of formula ABA, where each A is a poly-alpha-methylstyrene block and B is a polymer of a conjugated diene, are obtained by a three-stage sequential process using sec.-butyl lithium initiator, a hydrocarbon or alpha-methyl styrene solvent, and operating at temperatures within the ranges 0‹ to 40‹ C. for the first alphamethyl styrene polymerization, 40‹ to 80‹ C. for the subsequent diene polymerization and at temperatures up to 40‹ C. for the final alphamethylstyrene polymerization. Specified dienes are butadiene and isoprene. The final stage may be carried out in the presence of (a) 1 to 10 moles per mole of initiator of styrene, when B is polybutadiene and the medium for the final stage polymerization is alphamethyl styrene, or (b) 1 to 10 weight per cent of the reaction mixture of an ether, e.g. tetrahydrofuran or ethylene glycoldimethylether the polymerization being carried out at below 10‹ C., modifications (a) and (b) improving the linkage of the final A block to the live AB intermediate. The microstructure of the central diene block is typically substantially 1,4-linked, in examples the B blocks containing about 10 to 15% 1,2-structure and approximately equal cis- and trans-1,4 units. The monomers, solvents and additives are in mose cases purified before use by titration against sec.-butyl-lithium or a di-lithiopolydiene.
