1414733 Methacrolein; methacrylonitrile UBE INDUSTRIES Ltd 11 April 1973 [22 April 1972 9 June 1972] 17356/73 Heading C2C [Also in Divisions B1 and C5] Methacrolein is made by the oxidation of a C 4 distillation fraction from naphtha refining with a mixture of air and steam in the presence of catalysts of empirical formula Bi 0.5-10 Mo 0.05-5 V 0.05-2 W 0.05-3 X 0-5 O f where X is a Group II metal or manganese which catalysts may be supported. Methacrylonitrile is made by the ammoxidation of the same C 4 fraction with a mixture of air steam and ammonia in the presence of the same catalysts.
