Abstract

1414016 Aerials; radio signalling STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 17 May 1973 23528/73 Headings H4A and H4L A radiating cable arrangement, which may be installed along a roadway for broadcasting radio signals to drivers, comprises two closely spaced parallel cables A, B of the same kind, e.g. slotted co-axial type, and of equal overall lengths. The cable A, however, is sub-divided into two (or more) equal sections. R.F. signals are fed to the cables at one end of the arrangement, directly in the case of the cable A, and through means, such as length of fully screened cable K, in the case of the cable B, whereby a predetermined phase shift is introduced. Lengths of fully screened cable K<1> connect each adjacent pair of sections of the cable A, and provide a total phase shift which is equal to the aforesaid predetermined phase shift. The effect is, that at the beginning of each section of the cable A the signals in the two cables are brought more nearly into phase, so stepping up the magnitude of their resultant and compensating for attenuation over the previous section (Fig. 3, not shown). A typical value for the pre-determined phase shift provided by the cable K is 168 degrees (Fig. 2, not shown). Impedance matching between the cables and the signal source may be necessary.
