1413828 Laminates GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO 8 Dec 1972 [4 Jan 1972] 56703/72 Heading B5N [Also in Division B7] A container, e.g. an aircraft fuel tank, capable of withstanding temperatures of up to 350 F. consists of an inner layer 10 of polyurethane elastomer of 2-30 mils thickness adhered to at least one ply 11 of polyester fibre fabric coated on surface 11a with nitrile rubber which is adhered to a polyamide-based barrier layer 13 of thickness 0À25-5 mils by means of a tie coat 12 of nitrile rubber compounded with a phenolic resin, the outer side of the barrier layer being adhered by a tie coat 14 of nitrile rubber compounded with phenolic resin to at least one ply of polyester fibre fabric coated on the surface facing tie coat 14 with nitrile rubber and coated on the outside thereof with polyurethane elastomer 16. The layers may be built up on mould 9 of plaster of Paris, cardboard or rigid frangible foam coated with a parting agent, e.g. watersoluble protein glue or polyvinyl alcohol resin, and cured in an autoclave with live steam at about 240 F. for approximately 200 minutes, or in hot air or nitrogen for the same time and temperature. Woven polyester cloth may be dipped in an isocyanate prior to coating on one surface with the nitrile rubber. The barrier layer which provides a barrier to the loss of hydrocarbon fuel in liquid or vapour form may be a mixture of alcohol-soluble polyamide resin, epoxy resin and epoxy resin catalyst, preferably comprising 65-90% by weight of polyamide and 35-10% by weight of epoxy resin. The polyurethane layers 10 and 16, adhesive layers 12 and 14 and barrier layer 13 may be coated on to the mould, e.g. by spraying, dipping, or painting. The coated polyester fabrics may be applied in the form of strips with at least one lapped seam, the seams being cemented using a cement comprising butadiene-acrylonitrile rubber.
