Abstract

1358422 Laminated products GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO 29 Sept 1971 [12 Nov 1970] 45333/71 Heading B5N [Also in Division B7] A fuel tank for a vehicle comprises a shaped flexible diaphragm impervious to hydrocarbon fuels and their vapours attached to and dividing the tank into a lower fuel container and an upper air container, each container comprising a rigid concave shell particularly of steel, the fuel container having an inlet (usually capped with a pressure release type valve) and outlet for filling and removal of fuel and the air container having a vent to the atmosphere, the diaphragm being a laminate preshaped to the shape of the fuel container and positioned to be supported by fuel in the fuel container, the laminate comprising at least two layers of a flexible cured polymer adhered to at least one interposed layer of a hydrocarbon fuel barrier material having a neutral bending axis, the cured polymer layers being 5-120 mils thick and being of 1,3- butadiene/acrylonitrile copolymer or a mixture of 100 parts by weight thereof with 10-60 parts of polyvinyl chloride, and the barrier material being a 0.25-10 mil thick film of nylon particularly derived from #-caprolactam, polyvinylidene chloride, copolymers of vinylidene chloride, vinyl chloride, or acrylonitrile, or a polyester of terephthalic and/or isophthalic acids with HO(CH 2 ) n OH where n is 2-10, the ratio of terephthalate units to isophthalate units being from 20 : 80 to 100 : 0, particularly oriented polyethylene terephthalate. The diaphragm may be made by adhering the polymer layers to either side of the barrier material by means of a phenolic, epoxy or acrylonitrilebutadiene copolymer adhesive followed by heating, vacuum drawing and curing.
