Abstract

1413615 Concrete building modules H GORDON 12 Dec 1973 57628/73 Heading B5A [Also in Division E1] A concrete building module (Fig. 1) comprising a floor, ceiling and at least two side walls having projecting ribs 76, 80, is moulded by forming a reinforced concrete floor, positioning wall and ceiling mould panels over the floor together with mould elements to define the ribs, and spraying concrete between the mould elements and on to the exterior of the wall and ceiling mould panels. As described, the floor is formed by positioning reinforcing rods 34, 39 (Fig. 2) and a welded wire mesh 37 in a mould having adjustable side/end walls 27, 28 and a bottom wall 29. Fine aggregate concrete is sprayed or poured into the mould to form the floor having projecting rods 40, 35, and a terrazzo finish. Internal formwork is assembled over the floor (or pre-assembled) and comprises release-coated side panels 46, 47 (Fig. 6), one end panel, and a ceiling panel 49. The formwork is spaced inwardly of the floor projecting rods 35, 40 (Fig. 2) and supports electric outlet boxes, door frames &c. Reinforcement is assembled over (or preassembled) the formwork and comprises welded steel meshes 62-65 (Fig. 6) and spaced rods 67-69. Ribs are defined by mould elements 74 (Fig. 7) surrounding some of the reinforcement 67. Concrete is sprayed in layers over the formwork and between the mould elements 74. After setting, the formwork is collapsed and removed with the floor mould to leave a ribbed, reinforced module with the floor attached via the embedded rods 40, 35. A reinforced end wall is cast in a separate mould (see Fig. 9, not reproduced), and the wall (or a glass wall) is attached to the module by concrete sprayed over projecting rods. The module is finished internally, and then hoisted by embedded wire loops for stacking with similar modules. The ribs of adjacent side walls abut, and of floors and ceilings interlock, for interconnecting by cast, reinforced concrete and grouting. The exterior walls are finished. The floor mould and internal formwork are adjustable to provide different-sized modules, overhangs and balconies.
