Abstract

1413456 Liquefying gas LUMMUS CO 29 April 1974 [27 April 1973] 18710/74 Heading F4P A process for re-liquefying the gas evolved from liquefied ethylene stored in a cryogenic tank T (LE) at about atmospheric pressure, comprises passing the gas to a fractionating condenser 46 where it is brought into indirect heat transfer relationship with gas evolved from LNG which has a lower boiling point than ethylene, stored in at least one further tank. During transport in a ship (Fig. 1, not shown), gas evolved in tank T (LE) is led via lines 34, 38, 40 to condenser 46, whilst gas from the LNG tanks is passed to condenser 46 via lines 68, 66, 70. After passing through heat exchange tubing 74 in condenser 74, the natural gas is passed via line 76 and compressor 80 to a line 82 leading to the ship propulsion unit. Ethylene which is re-liquefied and forms at the bottom of condenser 46 is passed by pump 122 back to the tank T (LE) via lines 120, 124. Conversion from ethylene storage to LNG storage.-After all the tanks have been emptied it might be necessary to convert the tank from one which stores ethylene to one which stores LNG. In this case, residual vapour in line 66 from the LNG tanks is divided into two parts, one small part being passed via lines 112, 110 to tank T (LE) , and the rest passing to condenser 46 via line 70. Due to ethylene being heavier than natural gas, the ethylene vapours are displaced to the bottom of tank T (LE) and are withdrawn via lines 154, 156 and passed to condenser 46 via lines 34, 38, 40. Condensed ethylene is collected from the bottom of condenser 46 and passes to a liquefied ethylene holding tank 132 via lines 120, 126. Trace impurities are collected overhead and passed to the propulsion unit via lines 84, 88, 90, 76. When the tank T (LE) has 75% natural gas, the stream taken from line 154 is passed through lines 34, 38 and 58 to a reboiler 63 where the methane is stripped off before the ethylene gas passes to line 40 and back into condenser 40. Conversion from LNG to ethylene storage.-If tank T (LE) has been used for LNG storage and residual natural gas is left therein, then liquefied ethylene from holding tank 132 is passed via lines 138, 148 to vaporizer 160, and thence via line 162 to tank T (LE) where it is liquefied due to the cold generated by the natural gas. As pressure increases, gases are withdrawn via lines 34, 38, 40 to condenser 46. Minor quantities of ethylene in such gases are returned via lines 120, 124 to tank T (LE) while the major overhead portion passes to the propulsion unit. When - 170‹ F. is reached supply of ethylene vapour ceases and the tank is allowed to warm to - 1.50‹ F. whereupon the remaining liquid ethylene in tank 132 is passed by pump 140 via lines 146, 154 into tank T (LE) . In all cases the gases from tank T (LE) and the other tanks may, if their pressure is not high enough, be passed to the condenser 46 via compressors 52 and 98 respectively.
