1413384 Copolymers BAYER AG 29 March 1973 23601/75 Divided out of 1413382 Heading C3P A water-insoluble, cross-linked copolymer comprising the following copolymerized residues (percentages by weight of the cross-linked polymer): A: 0À1-30% of at least one α-#-monoolefinically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid anhydride having 4-9 carbon atoms; B: 35- 90% of at least one di- and/or polyacrylate or methacrylate of a diol and/or a polyol; and C: 5-60% of at least one hydrophilic monomer wherein the diol and/or polyol is defined as (i) di- or polyhydroxy compounds with at least two alcoholic or phenolic hydroxyl groups, (ii) the reaction products of the said di- or polyhydroxy compounds (i) with alkylene oxides having 2-8, preferably 2-4 carbon atoms or mixtures thereof, 1-10<SP>4</SP> alkylene oxide units being added to one mole of the di- or polyhydroxy compound (i). Examples of suitable alkylene oxides are ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, butylene oxide, trimethylene oxide, tetramethylene oxide, bis-chloromethyl-oxacyclobutane and styrene oxide, (iii) the reaction products of one of the alkylene oxides defined in (ii) with a compound having at least two Zerewitinoff active hydrogen atoms which is not an alcohol or a phenol. The hydrophilic monomer is defined as any singly unsaturated compound which does not fall within the definition of component B, which does not possess any functional groups which are reactive towards anhydride groups and which forms hydrophilic polymers. Preferably copolymerized residues A are of maleic anhydride, B are of ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol and tetraethylene glycol dimethacrylates, trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate and mixtures thereof and the copolymerized residues C are selected from residues of methacrylic acid, acrylic acid, methacrylamide, N-methoxymethylacrylamide, N - methoxymethylmethacrylamide, N - vinylpyrrolidone and mixtures thereof.
