Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain titled low-MW copolymer suitable for the production of high- solids polyurethane coatings, by polymerizing a monomer mixture containing an OH-containing acrylic monomer as an essential component using a specified diol as a MW modifier.
CONSTITUTION: An OH-containing acrylic copolymer is obtained by polymerizing 100pts.wt. monomer mixture consisting of an OH-containing acrylic monomer and other monomer, e.g., (meth)acrylate ester, in the presence of a radical polymerization initiator, e.g., t-butyl peroxy(2-ethylhexanoate), and 2W15pts.wt. diol of the formula, wherein X is a 1W8C aliphatic or alicyclic group which can contain an ethereal oxygen atom, e.g., diethylene glycol, in a solvent at 60W150°C.
EFFECT: It is possible to obtain rapid-curing polyurethane coatings which do not emit offensive odors during high-temperature baking an form films excellent in physical properties such as hardness, solvent resistance and weather resistance.
