Abstract
1413316 Article handling apparatus; packaging H F DALGLISH 21 Dec 1972 [6 Jan 1972] 59230/72 Headings B8H and B8C [Also in Division G1] Apparatus for handling a roll of material B by means of which it is possible to wrap, lift and weigh the roll, comprises a runway 10 along which the roll is moved until it is received in a V-shaped section 12 of the runway 10, the section 12 having rollers (29) which permit rotation of the roll about its axis, Fig. 4 (not shown), a probe 47 which has expansible jaws (not shown) for engagement with the inner surface of the core of the roll being pivotally mounted on a frame 46 which moves vertically within guides 45 mounted on a carriage 40 under the action of a ram (79), Fig. 3 (not shown), the carriage 40 being movable towards the runway 10 on a pair of parallel I-beams (31), 32, Fig. 1 (not shown). When a roll B is located in the section 12 of the runway 10 as shown it is wrapped by means of a roll of wrapping paper 72 whose end is taped to the roll B at 75 and a chuck 62 which is attached to a motor 63 is moved from its position shown in full lines in Fig. 2 to its position shown in dotted lines in which the chuck 62 engages the core of the said roll, and the motor is then driven to cause the roll B to rotate by one revolution on the rollers (29) thereby drawing the wrapping paper about the roll, the wrapping paper then being cut and taped at 75 to the part thereof originally taped to the roll, and the chuck and motor are then returned to their original positions. The probe 47 is then moved into engagement with the core of the roll by movement of the carriage 40 and adjustment of the frame 46 on the guides 45. The probe 47, carrying the roll B, is retracted to a position over a pallet (67) on a conveyer (66), Fig. 1 (not shown), and the probe 47 is rotated by means of a ram 54 to a vertical position so that the weight of the roll is recorded on a weighing scale 50 connected to the probe 47, the roll then being deposited on the pallet (67). In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the motor (94) and chuck (95) which cause rotation of the roll during wrapping thereof are mounted on a vertically movable frame (92) which is mounted on a carriage (86) disposed on the I-beams (35) while in a further modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the motor and chuck are disposed on the side of the runway opposite to that on which the probe is disposed.
