Abstract

141,324. Strasser, A. April 9, 1919, [Convention date]. Dry processes of refining aluminium.-For deoxidizing and refining aluminium, an aluminium cartridge containing potassium phosphide is first added to the metal heated above its melting- point to convert the impurities, silicon, and iron,. into phosphorus compounds; then, at a higher temperature, a second aluminium cartridge, containing one of the metals of the alkaline earths, is added. The alkaline earth metal combines with oxygen present as an impurity, and with the phosphorus compounds, and the oxides formed float on the surface of the aluminium. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states also that aluminium alloys may be similarly refined and that lithium may be used in the second aluminium cartridge added. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
