Abstract

142,441. Strasser, A. April 26, 1919, [Convention date]. Dry processes of refining copper.-For deoxidizing and refining copper, a copper cartridge containing potassium phosphide is first added to the metal heated above its melting-point to convert the impurities, silicon, and arsenic into phosphorus compounds; then, at a higher temperature, a second copper cartridge, containing one of the metals of the alkaline earths, is added. The alkaline earth metal combines with oxygen, present as an impurity, the phosphorus compounds and copper protoxide, and the oxides formed float on the surface of the copper. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) of the Act states also that copper alloys may be similarly refined and that lithium may be used in the second aluminium cartridge added. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
