Abstract

1413027 Foundry sand TSENTRALNY NAUCHNO - ISSLEDOVATELSKY INSTITUT TEKHNOLOGII MASHINOSTROENIA 4 Sept 1973 41593/73 Heading C3N A foundry moulding mixture comprises sand, a phenol, aldehyde resin binder, an acid catalyst, and a phenoxyalkylalkoxysilane, e.g. in an amount 0À1-1% by weight of the resin, having the formula wherein X is H, alkyl, alkoxy or -O(CH 2 ) n Si(OR) 3 where n is 2 or 3 and R is C 1-4 alkyl. Suitable phenoxyalkylalkoxysilanes are γ-phenoxypropyltriethoxysilane, γ - orthomethylphenoxypropyltriethoxysilane, γ - ortho - ethoxyphenoxypropyltriethoxysilane and di - γ- triethoxysilylpropyl resorcinol ether. The resin binder may be a phenol formaldehyde, resorcinol formaldehyde, phenol furfural or furyl phenol formaldehyde synthetic resin. The acid catalyst may be p-toluenesulphonic acid, benzenesulphonic acid or p-chlorobenzenesulphonic acid. The silane may be added into the resin at ambient temperature or preheated to 50- 60‹ C. The sand may contain up to 0À5% by weight of clay and admixtures of alkalies, carbonates and bicarbonates which are capable of reacting with the acid catalyst. A comparative example making use of γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane is also present.
