1412606 Power-assisted steering system K H THOMAS [trading as LANGEN and CO] 15 Dec 1972 [17 Dec 1971] 58035/72 Heading B7H In a hydraulically-assisted steering system including a control valve 3 exercising "twoedge" control over a servo motor 4 having major and minor piston faces F 2 , F 1 in respective working chambers 19, 20 which communicate with hydraulic reaction chambers 6, 11 containing reaction faces f 1 , f 2 on the control valve spool 8, there is provided an arrangement for limiting the effort required to operate the system comprising a pipe 21, 28 connecting the working chamber 19 to the reaction chamber 11 and divided into two branches 21<SP>1</SP>, 21<SP>11</SP> containing oppositely-arranged check valves 23, 24, and a piston valve 25 displaceable against spring-loading 26 by the pressure in the reaction chamber 11 and arranged to block a respective branch 21<SP>1</SP>, 211<SP>1</SP> when the pressure in the reaction chamber is above or below predetermined maximum and minimum values. In another embodiment a spring-loaded hydraulic accumulator is connected to the pipe leading from the piston valve 25 to the reaction chamber 11. The servo motor piston may have equal effective areas on both sides, pressure fluid being supplied to one side through pressure reducing means.
