Abstract
1412587 Biochemical reactions effected on silica and/or sulphate foam GARY AIRCRAFT CORP 19 March 1973 [20 Dec 1971] 59038/71 Heading C1C [Also in Division C6] A process for carrying out a biochemical reaction comprises the step of introducing the reactants to the surface of a rigid, porous and shaped inorganic foam substrate comprising or including a silica foam, a sulphate foam or a mixture thereof. Preferably the substrate is a silica foam coated with an organic polymer such as polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, methyl cellulose or gelatin, which polymer may contain a nutrient, e.g. a nitrate, a phosphate or a mixture thereof, The reaction may be aerobic, anaerobic or facultative. Typically the foam is used in a trickle filter. In one example the BOD and cyanide content of industrial waste water are reduced; and in another anearobic reduction of sulphates to sulphides in industrial waste water is achieved.
