Abstract

141,179. Millar, I. P. March 25, 1919. Spring devices.-In a spring-suspension fur a single wheel upon a motor-cycle, aeroplane, &c., the wheel-carrying frame comprises a pair of sheet-metal members A, C and B, C, which enclose the upper part of the wheel Z and are adapted to be separated without disengaging their connexions with a fixed portion of the vehicle, for the purpose of permitting the removal of the wheel or tyre from the machine. As shown, the neck portions C of the side members are spaced from the plates A, B by split rings F bolted to the portions C and the plates, spherical surfaces being provided at the front hinge ends of the portions C so that the members can oscillate vertically about the hinge under the control of springs E, and can also open laterally at their rear ends when access to the wheel is desired. The front ends of the springs are clamped to pillars G capable of turning about their axes, the rear ends being retained upon the rings F by spring fingers E<3> permitting a sliding movement. According to the Provisional Specification, the neck portions are pivotally mounted upon the frame or engine unit preferably on self-alining ball bearings, concealed stiff springs being arranged between alternate radial lugs formed respectively on a fixed part and on the portions C.
