1411255 Absorbing gaseous reactants SINLOIHI CO LTD 27 Nov 1972 [27 Nov 1971 7 Dec 1971 2 Oct 1972 (2) 3 Oct 1972] 54713/72 Heading B1X [Also in Division G6] A process for labelling a compound with a gaseous radioisotope comprises releasing the isotope in an isolated, evacuated system into contact with the compound, sorbing the excess isotope by a sorbent, and separately removing the labelled compound and the sorbent from the system under vacuum by melt sealing. In one embodiment the isotope, e.g. tritium is admitted from a source thereof to the system containing the compound and the sorbent and is at once sorbed before any significant reaction occurs; the system is then sealed, the tritium desorbed and brought into contact with the compound, excess being subsequently resorbed. The isotope may also be A-37, Kr-85, or C-14 or S-35 contained in a gaseous compound. Suitable sorbents are activated charcoal, silica gel, alumina, Pt, Pd, Ti, Zr, Ni, Li, Na, Ru, Cs, Ca, Sr, Er, U, copper oxide, platinum oxide or palladium oxide. Sorption and desorption may be controlled by heating and cooling the sorbent.
