Abstract
1411124 Protective arrangements NORTHERN ELECTRIC CO 20 Oct 1972 [26 Oct 1971] 48500/72 Heading H2K An overload protective arrangement for an electric blanket 10 of the kind having a heating element 12 and a sensing wire 14 separated by heat sensitive material, comprises a three electrode glow-discharge switch 26 having its anode cathode path 26d, 26a connected in series with the wire 14 and its control electrode 26c on a temperature sensitive movable arm 26b, a control device connected to the glow-discharge switch and having contacts 20 in series with the heating element 12 and means, e.g. a potentiometer 32, 34 to apply a potential between the cathode and control electrodes 26a, 26c when the blanket is energized. The application of this potential causes a glow-discharge which heats the arm 26b. The arm deflects and electrical connection is made between the electrodes 26a, 26c so that sufficient current flows to heat the bi-metallic element 22 of the control device to close the contacts 20. Current also flows through the ionized gas in the switch 26 and the sensing wire 14. Should overload occur, the heating of the heat sensitive material in the blanket causes this material to provide a low resistance path between the element 12 and wire 14 so that the current through the switch 26 is reduced, the arm 26b cools to break the connection between the electrodes 26a, 26c so that the control device opens its contacts 20.
