Abstract

1410866 Gas discharge display panels NCR CORP 10 Dec 1973 [26 Dec 1972] 57125/73 Heading H1D A plasma display device includes glass pattern-forming means 20 interposed between first and second wall members 12 and 14 at least one of which is transparent, said pattern-forming means 20 incorporating a cavity pattern defining at least one half-tone image to be displayed, and ionizable gas filling said cavity pattern, said wall members 12 and 14 incorporating electrode means 16 and 18 arranged to produce in operation an observable plasma glow in said gas thereby causing the half-tone image or a selected one of the half-tone images to be displayed by the device. The cavity pattern may be produced by coating the plate 20 with a layer of negative photoresist on which is exposed a half-tone transparency film produced from a film negative in a photographic enlarging process (Fig. 3, not shown) and then etching the coated plate. The cavity pattern may comprise a plurality of individual cavities or a single cavity partially occupied by a plurality of posts (Fig. 5, not shown). The electrodes form a cross-bar addressing system. Electrodes of each array may be commoned together to enable each of a plurality of images, the elements of which are interspersed, to be selected (Figs. 9 and 12, not shown). The gas filling may be a mixture of 99À7% Ne, 0À2% N and 0À1% A at a pressure of 160 torr.
