Abstract

1410652 Transport system; track apparatus; automatic train control DEXION-COMINO INTERNATIONAL Ltd 15 Feb 1973 [28 Feb 1972] 9177/72 Headings B7L and B7N A transport system comprises a track 2, a car 9 supported on wheels 1 mounted to swivel about upright axes, at least one wheel being driven by a power unit such as a battery driven electric motor 18, and automatic steering means including passive control means 39 and 28, 30 on the track which operate control means 40 and 23 to 26 on the car to swivel the wheels 1 so that the car follows a predetermined course while maintaining a constant orientation. The course is programmed by tripping appropriate reed switches 38, corresponding to the respective junctions to be negotiated, by track solenoids thereby setting bi-stable circuits to logic "1". Before each junction an actuating roller on the track trips a corresponding microswitch in a carrier 40 which is in the output circuit of the associated bi-stable circuit and, if the circuit has been set, energizes a solenoid 23a or 23b to project a plunger core 24a, 24b into the path of a stop 28 or 30 to steer the car. The four wheels 1 are coupled by a chain 16 to swivel in unison but they may alternatively be swivelled independently by servo-motors. The motor 18 may be replaced by an A.C. electric, I.C. hydraulic or pneumatic motor. The track employs flanged rails 2 in the regions of junctions but elsewhere the car may follow an inductive wire or painted line. The system may comprise loading and unloading stations, a car call-up and programming station where the reed switches 38 are set, pick-up and delivery stations associated with storage racks, accumulation sections for empty or loaded cars, maintenance sections and battery charging sections with bus-bars. Proximity sensing means comprise a segmented control track, rail or bus-bar with conductive segments and insulating inserts, and signal transmitting and receiving probes at the rear and front, respectively, of each car separated by a distance slightly greater than the length of a conductive segment, such that a car is stopped if it contacts a segment which is already contacted by a car in front. An externally applied signal may be used to stop cars at an accumulating section.
