A basket cart conveyer system comprises a basket cart 4 having wheels 4.5, 4.6, 4.7 and 4.8, Figs. 1 and 2, each swivellable about a vertical axis, and engageable in guide rails 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 and 1.4, respectively, of a conveyer track 1, inclined sections of the rails being displaced relatively to each other so that the cart remains horizontal as it is moved up the inclined section of the track by carriers 5.2 on an endless chain 5 driven from an electric motor 8, gear 9, a chain 10 and sprocket 7, the motor 8 having a brake 11 releasable by an electric motor 12. In order to ensure that a basket cart 4 can only be driven up the conveyer track with its wheels all positioned to trail as shown in Fig. 1, a normally closed electric switch 13 fixed by a support 14 to the rail 1.4 and operable by a cam 15 on the cart 4 is positioned relative to normally open electric switches 16, 17, 18 and 19 in the rails 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 and 1.4, respectively, and operable respectively by the cart-wheels 4.5, 4.6, 4.7 and 4.8, so that all switches can only be operated simultaneously to cause operation of the motors 12 and 8 when the wheels are correctly positioned, at the entry region of the conveyer. Referring to the electric circuit of Fig. 4, the electric motors 8, 12 are connected to an alternating current source R, S, T through a three-pole main switch 21 and a three-pole contactor 22.1 operable by a control relay 22. The control circuit fed from the lines R and S includes a normally closed stop push-button 25, the normally closed contacts 13.1 of the switch 13 in parallel with the series connected normally open contacts 16.1, 17.1, 18.1 and 19.1 of the track switches 16 to 19, a start, normally open, push-button 24 and the relay 22. When the push-button 24 is operated the relay 22 is held by a contact 22.2. If the basket cart wheels are correctly positioned all the track contacts will be closed when the contacts 13.1 are opened and thus the control circuit remains energized, but if any wheel is incorrectly positioned, the control circuit is broken when the contacts 13.1 are broken and thus the motors 8 and 12 are deenergized.
