Abstract

1410542 Preparation of aromatic ketones BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 2 Feb 1973 [3 Feb 1972 23 Feb 1972] 5278/73 Heading C2C Aromatic ketones are prepared by reacting a nuclear-acylatable aromatic compound with an acyl chloride or anhydride in the presence of up to 10% by weight of ferric chloride, based on the acyl compound, as a Friedel-Crafts catalyst. Preferred starting materials are a ketone of the formula and a benzoyl halide of the formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP>, which are the same or different, are hydrogen or halogen and R<SP>1</SP> may also be an aliphatic radical and X is a halogen. The examples describe the preparation of 2,5-dimethylbenzophenone, 4-methoxybenzophenone, 2 - methylbenzophenone, 4 - chlorobenzophenone, p - nitrobenzophenone, 2 - methyl - 5 - t - butylbenzophenone, 2- methyl - 5 - t - butyl - 21 - chlorobenzophenone, 2,3 - dimethyl - 5 - t - butylbenzophenone and 2,2<SP>1</SP>-dimethyl-5-t-butylbenzophenone.
