Abstract
1410335 Metal beams and columns; service conduit units in buildings; drainage systems; partitions SOC DE VENTE DE L'ALUMINIUM PECHINEY 11 Sept 1972 [10 Sept 1971] 42007/72 Headings E1A, E1C, E1K and E1W [Also in Divisions F2 and F4] A tubular beam 2 or column e.g. of anodised Al alloy is formed by a main channel of rectangular cross-section provided with four parallel flanges extending two parallel walls of the channel and subdivided by at least one longitudinal internal partition connecting non-parallel walls of the channel or two points on a single wall. The sub-division may provide subsidiary channels of rectangular cross-section at two adjacent or all four corners of the main channel (Figs 2, 6) or a single subsidiary channel on one wall only (Fig 7). The main channel can also be sub-divided by a portion extending parallel to .its walls or diagonally across it. A structural framework. Fig 2, is formed by bolting each of the beam flanges 241, 242 to both the column flanges 121, 122 (see also Fig 6). Communication between the main channels 10, 20 and the subsidiary channels 15, 27 is provided via apertures 126, 125 in the wall 12 of the column 1 and openings 246, 245 in the abutting wall 24 of the beam 2, fluid tight joints being made. The resulting fluid tight passages may be employed as ventilating ducts or for liquid distribution e.g. to cool the framework or to supply fresh and extract foul water. A further beam 3 of single hollow I crosssection may be fixed to the flanges 141, 142 of the column and a floor 6 may be borne on the beam flange 341. The framework may be clad by bolting panels to the column flange with the panel joints overlapping the column (Fig 3 not shown) and by securing two spaced parallel panels to span between a pair of columns large size ducts for ventilation or sewage may be formed (Fig 4 not shown). A water supply to a sanitary installation may be provided by a horizontal pipe 84, Fig 6, fed from a subsidiary channel 16 of the column 1 and waste may be drained away through a horizontal duct 83 into the column main channel 10. For this purpose an apertured panel 75 is secured to the column by being gripped between a pair of mounting plates 81, 82 bolted to the column flanges 121, 122 and provided with mating bosses 811, 821 and 812, 822 in which are seated seals 801 and 802. Fig 7 shows the use of beams 2 in a facade at the common ceiling/floor level, the ceiling 95 and floor 96 being supported by a separate load bearing framework, not shown. Cladding panels 93, 94 are bolted to the beam flanges 241, 242 and the horizontal beam walls 23, 21 support runners 91, 92 for sliding windows. In this arrangement water is suplied via channel 202 and waste water is removed along channel 201.
