Abstract
1410287 Carboniferous shale HOUILLERES DU BASSIN DU NORD ET DU PAS-DE CALAIS 22 March 1973 [13 April 1972] 13875/73 Heading C1A [Also in Division C5] Granules of a carboniferous shale containing ferric oxide and free carbon are prepared for expansion in a furnace by subjecting dried granules formed from a water paste made from the shale to a preheating step in the absence of ambient oxygen, treating the preheated granules in an oxidizing atmosphere at a temperature which exceeds the incipient shrinkage temperature (defined) of the shale so that the granules contain a uniformly distributed content of ferrous oxide and < 1 wt. per cent of expansionuseful free carbon based on the total weight of the granules. The preheating takes place in tubular rotary furnace 2 whose shoot 4 under cover 3 feeds the preheated granules to tubular furnace 5 having successitve air injection sparge tubes 16, 17 and 18 to provide three successive heating zones, temperature measuring elements 19 to 24, burner nozzle 26 and dilution air admission tube 27, preheater furnace 2 having also a burner nozzle 13 and dilution air admission tube 14. The material from furnace 5 then enters the furnace 8 via shoot 7, for expansion.
