Abstract

PURPOSE: To decompose laughing gas present in anesthetic gas into nitrogen and oxygen by bringing excess laughing gas into contact with catalyst containing as the main component at least one of platinum and palladium.
CONSTITUTION: The reactor 1 in which stainless steel tubes packed with a catalyst having at least one of granular alumina-supported platinum, -palladium, -rhodium, -iridium, and -ruthenium is heated to 150 to 550°C. On the other hand, excess anesthetic gas is sucked up with air by the excess anesthetic gas exhauster and the mixed gas is preheated by the heat exchanger 4 and the preheater 3 and then introduced into the heated reactor 1 to decompose laughing gas present in the gas into nitrogen and oxygen. The high-temperature gas so treated is heat-exchanged with the mixed gas discharged from the anesthetic gas exhauster by means of the heat exchanger 4 to lower its temperature and then diluted with air for releasing it to the outside.
