1410260 Life jackets B B U BONTHELIUS 7 Feb 1973 6061/73 Heading B7U A life jacket comprises a body piece 6 and a head piece 7 hinged together by material 13 which extends from the central region of the body piece to the outer region of the head piece. The hinge thus does not interfere with the freedom of the side edges of the body piece to curve round the wearer's body or with the freedom of the side edges of the head piece to curve outwards from the body. The opening in the head piece is normally closed by buoyant flaps 11, but these are folded back before use about hinges 12 to give additional support to the head of the wearer. A cord 14 connects the two sides of the jacket and is tensioned in use to raise the sides of the head piece. Tensioning may be carried out by engaging the cord with a hook 17 or by effectively shortening the cord, for example by passing a knot on the cord through a keyhole slot in one of the pieces 13 of lining material. The life jacket is made of closed cell foamed plastics covered by plastics sheet material. The jacket can be folded into a rectangular form, Fig. 2 (not shown), when the cord 14 serves as a carrying handle.
