Abstract

1409903 Polymeric antistatic agents KAO SOAP CO Ltd and KANEBO Ltd 1 Sept 1972 [1 Sept 1971 7 Aug 1972] 40689/72 Heading C3P [Also in Division D1] Solvent-soluble antistatic agents suitable for incorporation into fibres and materials made therefrom consist of a vinyl polymer having quaternary ammonium groups in its side chains, the anions of said groups being the anions of at least one anionic surfactant selected from anionic surfactants containing 2 to 8 ethylene oxide units, sulphonates containing one or more ester groups, N-alkanoyl-amidocarboxylic acid salts, amphoteric aminocarboxylic acid salts, and betaines. The antistatic agents can be prepared by polymerizing an amino-containing vinyl monomer and quaternizing the polymer product with a conventional quaternizing agent (or polymerizing the corresponding quaternized monomer direct), and then replacing the conventional anions in the quaternary ammonium groups by treating the polymer with an anionic surfactant. In examples the antistatic agents are derived from the following amino-polymers: (a) poly-(2-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate),), (b) styrene/2-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate copolymer, (c) acrylonitrile/2-methacryoyloxyethyl - dimethylethyl ammonium ethosulphate copolymer or the corresponding free amino form and (d) acrylamide/2-methacryloyloxyethyldimethylethyl - ammonium ethosulphate copolymer.
