Abstract

1409795 Graphite compositions HOWMET CORP 18 Oct 1972 [9 Nov 1971] 48059/72 Heading C1A [Also in Divisions C3 and B3] A core for use in the casting of high melting point metals comprises a shaped body formed of a graphite filler, a polysiloxane and a catalyst system for cure of the polysiloxane comprising the reaction product of a halide of a metal selected from Ti, Zr, Gd, Hf, Sb, Ta, In, Fe, Nb, Mo, W and Al and a boron compound selected from a trialkyl borate and a trialkoxy boroxine, e.g. Cl 2 Ti[OB(OCH 3 ) 2 ] 2 . In the specific Example (4) which refers to the use of graphite the graphite comprises a mixture of -200 mesh (Tyler) flour and 30-100 mesh (Tyler) particles. The composition is formed into the desired core shape and heated, suitably at 50‹ to 100‹F. perhour to 1200‹ F., which temperature may be maintained for 4 hours; thereafter the core is heated at 100‹ F. per hour until the core reaches 2050‹ F. and is held at this temperature to complete the baking and firing cycle and convert the polysiloxane to a siliceous material to bond the ceramic filler particles together.
