Abstract

1409356 Electrolytic regeneration of active carbon BATTELLE MEMORIAL INSTITUTE 12 Oct 1973 [12 Oct 1972] 47885/73 Heading C7B Active carbon particles contaminated with at least one oxidizable impurity are freed therefrom by circulating them, in an aqueous electrolyte suspension, so they repeatedly contact a fixed anodic current collector in an electrolytic cell, whereby anodically liberated atomic oxygen oxidizes the impurity. As described, the cell 1 may be divided by liquid permeable diaphragm 2 and a suspension of C particles in e.g. Na z SO 4 solution, is passed through the anode compartment 3. Baffle 17 causes turbulent flow to increase the collisions with the anodic collector 4. Pump 11 circulates the suspension and pipes 13 and 15 allow addition to or removal from the system. In examples, active carbon contaminated with phenol or organic matter from water is treated and the reactivated carbon is reused and reactivated cyclically.
