Abstract

1316401 Hydrodimerizing acrylonltrile ASAHI KASEI KOGYO K K 23 April 1971 [25 April 1970] 11194/71 Heading C7B In a process for hydrodimerizing acrylonitrile in an electrolyte containing an electrolysissupporting salt, acrylonitrile, adiponitrile and electrode reaction impairing materials, a portion of the electrolyte is removed from the cell, passed through a cation exchange resin to remove the electrode-reaction impairing materials and then returned to the cell. If the electrolyte is an emulsion it is first separated into oily and aqueous layers and only the aqueous layer is contacted with the ion exchange resin. If the electrolyte is a homogeneous solution, acrylonitrile and water are added to effect the separation into aqueous and oily layers. The exchange resin may be a weakly acid cation exchange resin comprising the cation of the supporting salt, the supporting salt being a quaternary ammonium salt. The reaction impairing materials and the cation of the supporting salt absorbed on the resin may be separated by chromatography. The ion exchange resin may be regenerated by treatment with an acid. The resulting liquid is dialyzed and the cation enriched liquid returned to the electrolytic cell. The electrolyte is pH 3-10 and the cathode is Pb, Hg, Zn, Cd or graphite and the anode is Pb, Pt, Ti, lead oxide or graphite.
