Abstract

1409312 Bituminous adhesive articles BERRY WIGGINS & CO LTD 28 Aug 1973 [5 Sept 1972 5 April 1973] 41178/72 and 16425/ 73 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] Substrates are coated with an adhesive composition comprising a bitumen, mineral oil, and a non-polymeric substrate which imparts to the adhesive composition a gel structure and, optionally, produced and/or fibrous filler. The gel structure imparting substrate may be a metal stearate or dimethyloctadecyl ammonium montmorillonite. The bitumen may be either oxidised or vacuum refined or a mixture of both. Fillers specified are slate dust, calcium carbonate, silica or asbestos. Flexible substrates to which the composition may be applied are aluminium, copper or lead foil, polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, copper or lead coated with polyethylene or polyvinyl chloride, or polyvinyl chloride coated aluminium. Such coated flexible assemblies may be used as sealing strips. However the adhesive may be applied to a non-flexible substrate such as aluminium or copper sheeting, polyethylene or polyvinyl chloride sheeting, hardboard, plywood, a hardboard or plywood containing laminate, or a metal coated with plastics material. The exposed adhesive surface is preferably protected prior to use by a release paper, e.g. a silicone paper, or alternatively the backing is coated on the non-adhesive side with a silicone which will act as a release surface. The sealing strip may be used for maintenance and repair purposes. The adhesive composition may be applied to the substrate by doctor blades. A composite material comprising a layer of the adhesive composition between two sheets or strips of release paper is also contemplated.
