Abstract

1409241 Even particulate coating IMPERI AL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES LTD 18 Aug 1972 [25 Aug 1971] 39841/71 Heading B2E [Also in Division Dl] Apparatus for evenly distributing even small quantities of particulate material onto a substrate comprises, a hollow cylinder 1 having a slot 4 therein extending parallel to the axis of the cylinder; a rotor 2 comprising a shaft 5 mounted coaxially through the cylinder 1 and a plurality of axially extending vanes 7 mounted at their ends by supports (8), Fig 3 (not shown), fixed to the shaft 5, the rotor 2 being at least as long as the slot 4, the outer edges of the vanes 7 lying adjacent but not touching the inner wall of the cylinder and the vanes 7 having a radially measured dimension less than the internal radius of the cylinder 1 so that a channel 20 is defined; means for supplying particulate matter at a constant rate to the channel 20; said rotor being rotatable at a uniform rate to maintain turbulence in the fluid within the cylinder; and means for advancing a substrate at a uniform rate adjacent the slot 4. The vanes may be interconnected by braces 6. Preferably a turboblower 33, 33', Fig 4, forces air past a baffle 32, 32' to entrain particles supplied from a vibro-screw feed 31, 31' and carry them to the channel 20, 20' of apparatus mounted on both sides of a substrate. The substrate 21 is preferably non-woven fabric of 5 denier fibres with a core of nylon 6.6 and a sheath of nylon 6, the core being 65% of the total fibre weight, the fibres being bonded by heating to soften the nylon 6 sheath. Self cross-linking acrylic adhesive emulsion 25 may then be applied by a gravure roller 22 dipped in a trough 26 and having a doctor blade. Fibres of α-cellulose are then applied by the apparatus before the adhesive is dried by a drier 41.
