Abstract
1409031 Cover assembly for ascension pipes SIMON-CARVES Ltd 14 Feb 1974 [6 March 1973 15 June 1973] 6726/74 Heading C5E A cover assembly for an opening in the upper region of an ascension pipe of a coke oven comprises a circular closure disc placeable on a flange surrounding the opening to cover the same, means for rotating the disc in a situ about the central axis of the opening and scraping members fixedly mounted on the flange for cleaning the peripheral edge of the disc during rotation thereof. The rotation means may comprise (i) a pinion attached centrally to the disc, and a toothed rack reciprocable relative to the pinion to drive same and which may be attached to the free end of a piston-rod of a fluid cylinder carried by a coal charging car and movable in and out of engagement with the pinion; (ii) a member attached centrally to the disc, and means capable of being lowered axially on to the member for engagement therewith, the means having drive means thus to rotate the member and the disc during engagement, and may be carried by a coal charging car and thus movable between cover assemblies of adjacent ascension pipes in a coke oven battery. In an embodiment of (ii), the member attached to the disc has a bevel gear, and the means includes a hollow cone having internal teeth adapted to engage the bevel gear when the cone is lowered; or the member has a plurality of radial arms, and the means includes a further member having a plurality of fingers adapted to become interdigitated with the radial arms when the further member is lowered. The flange may be of annular form having an inner peripheral edge corresponding with the aperture, further scraping members being provided in spaced apart relationship on the under-side of the closure disc and adapted upon rotation thereof to scrape the inner peripheral edge of the flange. The flange may be of annular form defining an aperture which tapers downwardly, the peripheral edge of the closure disc also tapering downwardly and adapted to be seated within the flange.
