Abstract

1408592 Foamed drawn thermoplastic resin sheets MONSANTO Ltd 18 June 1973 [20 July 1972] 34029/72 Heading C3C [Also in Division B5] Foamed oriented sheets are made by extruding a foamable vinyl aromatic resin having a flexural modulus of at least 150,000 p.s.i. (measured by A.S.T.M. D 790) through a slit die into a zone difined by a pair of opposed cooled surfaces such that the resin foams as it passes through the zone and the cooled surfaces contact the foaming resin to produce a sheet having an intermediate cellular layer enclosed between unfoamed surface layers and drawing the sheet to orient the surface and intermediate layer in at least one direction in the plane of the shee The resin may be polystyrene and the sheet may be drawn either before the surface layers have solidified fully or after re-heating. The sheet may be formed into a container by scoring a flex-line on an unfoamed surface at right-angles to a direction of orientation.
