Abstract
1407584 Purification of mercury TESSENDERLO CHEMIE SA 29 May 1974 [30 May 1973] 23774/74 Heading C7D A process and apparatus for purifying mercury, particularly that originating from the decomposition of alkali metal amalgams in a vertical decomposer, consists of passing a purifying liquid countercurrent to the mercury flaring in a tube The outlet lock chamber 1 of a vertical decomposer is connected to a fleet topped tubular or U-shaped pipe 2 at an angle to the horizontal, preferably 8-15 degrees. A series of regularly spaced baffles 3 extend from the top of the pipe with their lower edges dipping into the mercury stream. The lower end of the pipe 2 opens into a chamber 4, divided into compartments by circular skirts 6, 7, with a central tube 5 through which the mercury is pumped back to the electrolytic cell. The purifying liquid, e.g. water, or aqueous solution of sulphurous acid or methyl alcohol is introduced into chamber 4 in the annular space between tube 5 and skirt 6, flows in the annular spaces between skirts 6 and 7, then flows up tube 2 countercurrent to the flowing mercury, under the baffles 3 causing the water to pass through the mercury to purify it, to chamber 1 and the vertical decomposer. Air removed from the water in chamber 4 is exhausted via chimney 8.
