Abstract

1407568 Halogen incandescent lamp PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 25 May 1973 [31 May 1972] 25153/73 Heading H1F A halogen incandescent lamp is made by filling an envelope provided with filament with a a gas mixture comprising an inert gas and a hydrocarbon halide compound, sealing the lamp, cooling the sealed lamp to a temperature below the condensation temperature of the inert gas and then immediately operating the lamp so as to decompose the compound into carbon and a hydrogen halide. In an embodiment, an envelope having a tungsten filament is filled with a mixture of Kr and CH 2 Br 2 , sealed and immersed in liquid nitrogen. The lamp is removed from the liquid nitrogen and a voltage applied across the terminals which is 80% of the operating voltage. The voltage is then increased to 110% of the operating voltage. No deposit of carbon black is observed. The inert gas may also be Xe or Ar. The carbon released by decomposition is said to serve as a getter for unwanted residual gases such as oxygen.
