Abstract

1,161,038. Electric incandescent lamps. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 1 Jan., 1968 [4 Jan., 1967 8 Dec., 1967], No. 60/68. Heading H1F. In an incandescent lamp comprising a tungsten filament situated within a bulb of highmelting-point translucent material, e.g. quartz, having a filling of hydrogen with chlorine, bromine or both, the filament being so near to the bulb wall that the temperature of the wall during operation is above the temperature at which compounds of tungsten and halogen condense, the other metal parts within the bulb are of molybdenum coated with a carbon film. These metal parts may be lead-in wires, filament supports, mirrors or screens and the coating may have a thickness of the order of 1 micron. The gas mixture may be introduced in the form of HCI, HBr or hydrocarbon halide such as CH 2 , Cl 2 , CH 2 , Br 2 or CH 2 , Cl Br with additional hydrogen if desired, and an inert gas may also be included. The carbon coating also serves as a getter for oxygen. The coating may be produced by heating the metal parts in chloroform at a temperature between 800‹ and 950‹ C. for a very short period, e.g. 1 second.
