Abstract

1407404 Tyre anti-skid studs DUNLOP Ltd 27 Sept 1972 [2 Oct 1971 4 Feb 1972] 45939/71 and 5269/72 Heading B7C A tyre anti-skid stud comprises a body, e.g. 1, and a plurality of anti-skid elements, e.g. 2, embedded in the body ao as to project beyond the body to dig into and provide grip on an icy surface when the body is anchored in the tyre tread. In use the body is embedded in the tyre tread so that an end face, e.g. 3, thereof lies substantially flush with the tread surface, and the anti-skid elements may be such as to project no more than 1 mm. from the tread surface when the body is so embedded. The body may be moulded or cast, e.g. from rubber, plastics, lead or brass, and may have a circular cross-section, being either cylindrical or shaped to facilitate anchorage in the tyre tread, e.g. as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Alternatively the body may be provided with screw-threading or barbs to assist anchorage in the tread. The anti-skid elements may be made of tungsten carbide and may consist of pin-like members, having a diameter of up to 1À5 mm. at their ground contacting surface, or various lengths of filamentary material. In order to facilitate securement in the body the elements may have their surfaces roughened, and/or be provided with grooves or projections (e.g. 5, Fig. 1), and/or be bonded into the body by adhesive. Alternatively the elements may be secured to a base structure, e.g. a rigid disc 11, Fig. 2, anchored in the body.
