Abstract

1407380 Oxygen determining cell BBC BROWN BOVERI & CO Ltd 3 Jan 1974 [5 Jan 1973] 00291/74 Heading G1N A cell for determining the dissolved oxygen content of a flowing fluid comprises a gas permeable membrane 3, electrodes 7, 8, a receptacle 1 for electrolyte at least partially bounded by the membrane and containing the electrodes, and a conduit for the flowing fluid communicating with the receptacle through the membrane, the receptacle being disposed around the periphery of the conduit. The conduit carries fixing for incorporation into a pipe carrying the fluid and the membrane is not easily contaminated as it does not impede the fluid flow. Preferably membrane, electrodes and receptacle are all annular or tubular. The membrane 3 may form the conduit wall and be a porous material of ceramic, PTFE metal reinforced PTFE or sintered metal optionally coated with a diffusion controlling layer. Alternatively the wall may be perforated and support a membrane. The electrodes can be wire windings (8) meshes (7) perforated tubes, rings or coatings on the membrane, a sheath or a plastics support and may comprise sintered metal, oxide semi-conductor or porous carbon. The cathode 8 is preferably nearer the membrane and may cover only part thereof. The anode and cathode may be separated and supported by a plastics lattice 12 which divides the electrolyte into compartments, reducing the current load and drift per (subdivided) cell. The cathode may be shaped to support other dividing panels. The casing may be removable and is preferably coated so that it is gas tight. It may comprise a filling orifice or the electrolyte may be injected through a plastics casing. The oxygen is converted to hydroxide ions which determine the cell current which is measured. For some cells an external voltage is necessary; for others the electrochemical potential (galvanic voltage) between the electrodes is sufficient. Preferred combinations are:- Ag anode; Au cathode; KCl electrolyte; impressed voltage. Pb anode; Ag cathode; KOH electrolyte; galvanic voltage. Pb anode; Ag cathode; KHCO 3 electrolyte; galvanic voltage. Many modifications to the cell construction are shown.
