PURPOSE:To improve durability of an electrode by preventing it from corrosion and deterioration, by providing a porous protecting coating on the surface of a metallic protective tube covering a solid electrolytic element, and thereby allowing carbon, lead and sulfur, etc. to adhere to the coating. CONSTITUTION:A metallic protective tube 5 which is provided with a number of small pores 6 is provided on outside circumference of an element consisting of a zirconia solid electrolyte 1. On the surface of this metallic protective tube 5, a porous protective coating 9 which is formed by plasma flame coating of powder consisting of such a substance as MgAl2O4 is provided. By using such a structure, exhaust gas passes at first the porous protective coating 9 on the metallic protective tube 5. At this time, major portion of such substances as carbon, lead and sulfur, etc. adhere to this porous protective coating 9. And then, the exhaust gas passes through the small pores 6 and reaches the porous protective coating 4 on the electrode 3. The remaining substances such as carbon, lead and sulfur, etc. adhere to the porous protective coating 4 and then removed.
