Abstract
1,216,024. Moving gases. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. May 27, 1969, No.26645/69. Heading F1N. [Also in Divisions C7 and G1] The invention relates to bonding the electrodes to a solid oxygen-ion electrolyte in a cell which may be used as an oxygen sensor or an oxygen pump. As described the cell comprises a zirconia type electrolyte tube which is coated internally with an aqueous suspension of stabilized zirconia with a wetting agent (e.g. methylcellulose with 1-3% antifoam agent) before a close fitting coiled platinum wire electrode is inserted, Figs. 4, 5 (not shown). The assembly is dried by heating and then sintered to form a porous zirconia binder. This porous binder may be impregnated with a platinum resinate - platinum paste mixture to improve the conductivity (particilarly for use as a pump). The exterior electrode is formed by coating the tube with a mixture of platinum resinate and platinum paste and heating to 800 F. to form a platinum wire and coil, Fig. 3 (not shown).
