Abstract
1407197 Casting processes HENRY WIGGIN & CO Ltd 6 Nov 1972 [24 Nov 1971] 54626/71 Addition to 1239066 Heading B3F [Also in Division C7] The grain size of a metal or alloy is refined by adding thereto, prior to casting, a nickel carrier containing particles of tungsten oxide, less than two microns in size and formed in the nickel by internal oxidation. The initial nickel alloy may contain 1-17% (preferably 3-6%) W, may be in the form of a strip 0À05-0À4 mm. thick, may be internally oxidized in air or CO 2 and may be added to alloys containing Ni 20-80%, Cn 5-35%, Co up to 40%, Fe up to 50%, A1 and Ti up to 10% each and conventional amounts of B, Hf, Nb, Ta, W and Zn, to Cu-Al alloys, to stainless or other steels or to brass. A suitable weight to add is 0À2-0À5% based on the weight of the melt. The melt may be poured at temperatures between 1395‹ C. and 1450‹ C. into moulds preheated to 800‹ C. to 1000‹ C.
