Abstract

1406508 Continuous production of starch pastes ROQUETTE FRERES 17 Aug 1972 [17 Aug 1971] 38478/72 Heading C3U A continuous process for the preparation of starch pastes having a dry substances content of up to 70% by weight in which starch or a chemically modified starch in granular form and without the intermediate formation of a slurry is continuously supplied to a reaction zone where it is subjected with stirring in aqueous medium and at elevated temperature and a pH of 4À5 to 8 to the action of a liquefying enzyme and the liquefied starch is then recovered from the reaction zone. There may be included in the reaction zone a plasticizing agent, a stabilizing agent, a viscosity improver, a swelling retarding agent, an agent which fluidifies amylaceous powders in an amount up to 25% by weight of the starch present. Examples of such agents include sodium nitrate, urea, dicyandiamide, glycerine, sorbitol, borax, sodium metaborate, sodium aluminate, aluminium sulphate, sodium sulphate, sodium citrate and colloidal silica. The enzyme may be bacterial α-amylase, fungal α- amylase or malt α-amylase.
