Abstract

1406370 Preparing polyesters TOYO SODA MFG CO Ltd 30 July 1973 [18 Aug 1972] 36065/73 Heading C3R Polyesters are prepared by reacting an alkylene oxide with a dicarboxylic acid anhydride in the presence of a catalyst of the formula: R 1 -S m O n -L in which L is sodium or potassium, m is 1 or 2, n is 2, 3 or 4 when m is 1 and 3 or 4 when m is 2, and R 1 is sodium, potassium or a substituted or unsubstituted C 1 -C 20 hydrocarbyl radical. The catalyst may be used in an amount of 0À01 to 5 mol. per cent based on the anhydride and may be mixed with up to 30 mol. per cent, based on the anhydride, of a compound containing a reactive hydrogen. The examples describe preparing polyesters from maleic anhydride, phthalic anhydride, succinic anhydride, 1,4-tetrahydrophthalic anhydride, itaconic anhydride, propylene oxide, epichlorohydrin, alkylglycidyl ether, ethylene oxide, glycidyl methacrylate, styrene oxide, ethylene glycol, methanol, acetic acid and glycerine using the following catalysts: sodium lauryl benzenesulphonate, sodium lauryl sulphate, sodium benzenesulphinate, sodium sulphite, sodium thiosulphate, sodium lauryl sulphonate, disodium m-benzenesulphonate, sodium dithionite and potassium sulphate.
