Abstract

1406169 Alpha-numeric displays SONY CORP 26 April 1973 [28 April 1972 (2)] 19844/73 Heading G5C An alpha-numeric display device comprises a transparent or translucent plate 10, an opaque layer 11 covering the plate and containing an array of windows 12, a plurality of LED's 13 mounted, with their junctions parallel to the plate, on the opaque layer and light transmitting layers 14 optically coupling the diodes to the windows. Two relatively short diodes illuminate each horizontal window and one long diode each vertical window. A window for a decimal point may be provided. The plate may carry a plurality of arrays each with a separate opaque layer of Au, Al or Cu, acting as a common electrode. A further Au layer may be added if the layer is Cu. The device is formed by mounting a strip of LED material on the opaque layer and sandblasting the strip to divide it into two rows of diodes, each row associated with an array on the side adjacent the row. The device is cleaned in H 2 SO 4 and H 2 O 2 and boiled in H 2 O 2 . Transparent, insulating and reflecting layers are added and the reflector above each window is roughened to scatter emergent light. A pattern of conductive resin strips extending across the diodes is added to connect corresponding diodes in each array and diodes illuminating the same window. The LED strip may be divided into diodes of triangular plan form.
