Abstract

1406059 Suction holding appliances AIRFLEX CONTAINERS Ltd and C D D HICKLEY 10 Dec 1973 [11 Dec 1972] 57059/72 Heading B8H [Also in Divisions B7 and F1] A suction holding appliance for use, e.g. as a load support surface on a road vehicle, ship or aircraft retains the load thereon by a suction force applied to the load in dependance of its weight. The surface comprises a vacuum chamber 12, connected to a vacuum source, not shown, a resilient pad secured to the chamber and a series of holes 13 extending through the pad and a wall 10 of the chamber. A plug 14 is located in each hole and has a flange 17 at its lower end to retain the plug within the pad 11 and to form a seal therewith in the unloaded condition of the support surface. A series of radial holes 18 are disposed near the lower end of the plug and communicate with longitudinal bores 20 extending to a suction surface 15 whereat they are interconnected by grooves 21. In use, when an article is placed on the surface the plugs are depressed into the vacuum chamber by an amount dependant on the weight of the load whereby a certain number of the holes 18 are brought into communication with the chamber to create a suction force at the surface dependant on the weight of the load. When the appliance is used in an aircraft the vacuum chamber may be connectable to the outside of the aircraft so that after take-off of the aircraft the suction can be supplied by the low pressure atmosphere outside the aircraft.
