Abstract

1406005 Electromagnets VICTOR COMPTOMETER CORP 15 Oct 1973 [30 Oct 1972] 48521/73 Heading H1P [Also in Division F2] A solenoid for actuating, e.g. a wire printer comprises (Fig. 1) a housing 12, e.g. of Cd plated rolled steel reduced to define a circumferentially grooved mounting hub 13 engageable in an aperture for retention by a split ring. A reduced hub 15 protrudes inwardly of the housing and a stepped bore 16 through the hubs is reduced in diameter at 17. A plastic spool 19 wound with a coil 22 secured with thermosetting tape is mounted interiorly of the housing with outgoing leads 23. A Cd plated centrally apertured rolled steel polepiece 26 is mounted interiorly adjacent the flange 21 of the spool and spaced off by protuberance 25, and an annular plastic stepped spring seat defines a flange filling the open rear end of the housing to engage polepiece 26. Diametrically opposed recesses 31 thereof receive the ends of a laminar rhomboidal steel spring 32 (Fig. 6) whose central recess engages a Ni plated steel plunger 34 with an outer integral head 35 extending through the aperture polepiece 26 into the interior of the spool 19. A central bore of the plunger receives a print wire 36, and the plunger has a peripheral groove 37 therein (Fig. 2, not shown) compressible by swaging to the shape shown in Fig. 1 to secure the wire. An extruded plastic guide tube is then slid into bore 16 to enclose the wire and form a longitudinal bearing for the source, with an auxiliary plastic bearing at the inner end. A plastic cap 41 closes the rear end of the housing with extending arms 42 snap fitting into circumferential groove 18, and has a stepped bore 44 guiding the rear end of print wire 36 and apertures for the leads. On energization of the winding plunger 34 is driven inwardly to protrude the print wire and on de-energization it is restored by spring 32.
